Each month on the Saturday closest to the third quarter Moon we open the Leasburg Dam observatory to the public. Check the events calendar for actual dates. Members from the Astronomical Society of Las Cruces operate the 16" Meade SCT and typically one or more telescopes just outside the observatory. With the Moon being below the horizon and a clear sky you can see the Milky Way galaxy just by looking up. Through the telescopes you can see nebulae, globular clusters, planetary nebulae, and far away galaxies.
From Las Cruces drive north on I-25 to exit 19. Then go SW just under a mile. Once you cross the train tracks look for the right turn into the setting Sun (it's best to get there around sunset). The cost to enter the park is $5 per car. There are two places where you can pay which are depicted in the final picture. Bring $5 and a pen to write with.
If you get there too late the gate might be closed. Don't drive through the outgoing lane as that will flatten your tires.
